The Book of Doom
The second hilarious book in Barry’s AFTERWORLDS sequence – comic fantasy perfect for fans of Pratchett and Douglas Adams. There’s panic up in Heaven. They have mislaid the BOOK OF DOOM – the most important object in existence. Oopsy. They think Satan might have stolen it, the sneaky little devil, so to save the world – plus, you know, quite a lot of embarrassment, fifteen year old Zac and his angelic guide Angelo are sent to retrieve it. Sadly directions …

The Book of Doom Publication Day (or How to Help an Author)
It’s finally here! The Doomsday Clock has counted all the way down to zero, and the right-wing US Christian Fundamentalists are furiously scribbling their death threats even as we speak. Yes, The Book of Doom is officially published today! I am hugely proud of this book, perhaps even more so than all the others I’ve written. It has angels! Demons! Vikings! A semi-naked Greek guy wearing a fez! There’s a nightclub in Hades where Medusa goes, wearing a paper bag over head …

Some thoughts on literary Lampard
Social media was all a-twitter the other day (see what I did there?) over news that England and Chelsea footballer, Frank Lampard, is to write a series of five books for children, to be published by Little, Brown later this year. Based on my observation and a highly unscientific survey I conducted on my Facebook page, suggests reaction to the news has been fairly negative – particularly among children’s authors. There have been a lot of “he’s nicking our jobs” …

Happy 5th Birthday, Blog!
Right, so I don’t actually have much time to do a big special birthday blog an’ that, but I felt I had to at least post something to mark the fact that it was five years ago today that I started this blog. So, to mark my half-decade of writing this nonsense, here are five of my own favourite posts from the past five years, in no particular order… 1. The 50th Post 2. The 100th Post Spectacular! 3. Meeting Neil …

Story, Summed Up
I’ve just started reading one of my Christmas pressies - The DC Comics Guide to Writing Comics, written by comic-book legend, Dennis O’Neill. I just wanted to share the opening paragraphs with you, as I think they perfectly sum up what every writer should be trying to do. If you’re aiming for a career as an author – take note. Here’s what I’d like you to do for me: Make me laugh. Make me cry. Tell me my place in the …
Birthday Treats
This Sunday (6th January) is my 35th birthday. Rather than ask you all to send me expensive gifts, though, (but you can if you want) I’ve decided to flip things around and give you some pressies instead. So, on Sunday I’ll be giving away some exclusive content here on the site at random points throughout the day. Among these will be the first exclusive extract from my upcoming new novel, The Book of Doom. If you have a Kindle, or have downloaded …

And Here’s What Happened in 2012
First up, for those of you who were following my Book Advent Calendar until it stuttered to a halt, let me apologise. What can I say? It seemed like a great idea on December 1st, but with Christmas closing in, Christmas pressies to buy, tinsel to hang, nativity plays to go to and general Christmassy stuff demanding my attention, I just couldn’t squeeze it into the day any longer – especially as I had my 13th Horseman short story, The 3 …
