Back when I were a lad, many moons ago, I was a huge fan of the Beano. I’d buy the comic week in, week out, keeping up to date with the adventures of Dennis the Menace, Billy Whizz, the Bash Street Kids and all the rest of them. I was a fully paid-up member of the fan club (and had the hairy Gnasher badge to prove it) and the Beano played a huge part in shaping the sense of humour that can be seen in my books and my episodes of Bottom Knocker Street.
Last year, I managed to achieve something of a lifelong dream when I joined the writing team on the Beano. That’s right, little old me got to start writing adventures for some of the best-loved characters in the history of comics!
In the current issue, which came out on 4th Feb, I’ve written not one, not two, but three different scripts – Ball Boy, Gnasher & Gnipper and… wait for it… The Bash Street Kids! Every time I see one of my scripts all drawn up and in the comic, I can’t help but think how impressed my 8-year-old self would be. Then again, he’d probably only ask why I wasn’t writing his favourite character, Calamity James, yet.
To which I’d reply, “Give it time, 8-year-old me, give it time…”
Then give him every set of lottery numbers for the past 20 years, and run away laughing.
